Frequently Asked Questions about leak Detection
Pool Leak Detection FAQ
How do I know if my pool has a leak?
Common signs of a pool leak include the water level dropping faster than normal, wet or soggy areas around the pool or equipment, air bubbles coming from the returns, trouble keeping the pool full, cracks in the pool surface, loose tile, or the pool needing to be refilled often.
Could it just be evaporation?
Yes. In Florida, it is normal for pools to lose water from evaporation, especially during hot, sunny, windy, or dry weather. Pools with screen cages, waterfalls, spas, or water features may also lose water differently depending on use and conditions. If the water loss seems excessive or continues every day, leak detection may be needed.
How much water loss is normal?
A small amount of water loss can be normal, but if your pool is losing more than expected or you are adding water frequently, it is worth checking. A simple bucket test can help determine whether the water loss is from evaporation or a possible leak.
What is a bucket test?
A bucket test compares how much water your pool loses compared to water inside a bucket placed on the pool step. If the pool water drops more than the bucket water, the pool may have a leak.
What areas of the pool can leak?
Leaks can happen in several areas, including the pool shell, skimmer, return lines, main drain, light niche, tile line, spa wall, plumbing lines, fittings, water features, or equipment pad.
Do you check both the pool and spa?
Yes. We can inspect pool-only systems, pool/spa combinations, and water features. Spas can leak separately from the pool, especially around the spillway, jets, fittings, drain, or plumbing.
What leak detection methods do you use?
Coastal Creations Pools and Lagoons uses methods such as hydrophone listening, dye testing, visual inspection, and targeted testing based on the symptoms and pool setup.
Does leak detection include repairs?
Basic leak detection may identify the suspected leak area. Small epoxy repairs may be possible depending on the issue, but plumbing repairs, structural repairs, tile repairs, or larger leak repairs are quoted separately.
Can you repair the leak if you find it?
In many cases, yes. Because Coastal Creations is a licensed pool contractor, we can quote the proper repair once the leak source is identified. Some leaks may require further plumbing repair, surface repair, tile work, equipment repair, or renovation.
Should I schedule leak detection before resurfacing my pool?
Yes. If your pool may have a leak, it is best to identify the problem before resurfacing. Resurfacing over an unresolved leak can lead to future damage, water loss, or additional repair costs.
Can a pool leak damage my yard or deck?
Yes. Ongoing water loss can wash out soil, create soft spots, damage decking, affect pavers, cause erosion, or create issues around the pool structure.
What should I tell you before the appointment?
Please let us know how much water the pool is losing, how often you are adding water, whether the pool loses more water when the pump is on or off, and whether you notice any specific areas that seem wet, cracked, loose, or suspicious.
Do I need to have the pool full for leak detection?
Yes, the pool usually needs to be filled to its normal operating level so the system and suspected leak areas can be properly checked.
